Methodology - Using Technology to Teach and Test Speaking

This workshop will help us use technology to get students speaking and learning language online. It will also look at ways to use technology to assess students speaking. Here's my introduction using Bubblejoy!

Here are my top 10 websites!

We will look at:

1. How to use Voicethread. Make a recording of a voicethread. Textbook Example. This shows how to sign up for a FREE teacher's account. See below about how to sign up!
2. How to use Voxopop. Make a recording of a voxopop.
3. How to use Tarheel Reader. Make a Tarheel Reader book. (and share/read them!)
4. Using Bubblejoy to produce a short video recording.

Get many video tutorials for these and other educational technologies HERE!

TARHEEL READER

The Tarheel reader is a place where you can find online books of all kinds! Share them with your students and it is a great place to learn vocabulary. Books repeat language and are at all different levels for English Language Learners. You can also export your books when finished into powerpoint!

TASK #1

Here's a quick screencast showing you how to use Tarheel Reader.

With Tarheel Reader, you can;
1. Share and read books together. Use the voice option or just have your students be the reader!
2. Get content for any type of lesson theme (holidays, ABC, people, places etc...)
3. Get your students to make books or you the teacher can make a book for students! This is a great way to consolidate learning!
4. Export your books into Power Point! Carry them around, edit in powerpoint and even make a movie if you get ambitious. Here is my example below!

TASK 2: Go to Tarheel Reader and make a book! Read the instructions above or on the site. Use our ID/PW EFL Classroom / efl20 All our books will be together in one spot.
You have 2 options.
A) Make a book using Flikr pictures. Just search for the category and choose to make your book.
B) Make a book using your own photos. Upload them. Use these photos I've attached as examples. Mr. X's Amazing Day.

TASK 3: Go to our Forum and give an example of one Tarheel book you just loved! Tell us why and how you might use it in class!

Here's my video of a Tarheel Reader made with Windows Movie Maker after I downloaded the ppt. Get the Tarheel book here.

With any of these applications, you can use the attached SOLOM - Student Oral Language Observation Matrix and assess your students oral production (speaking).

TASK #1 - VOICETHREAD

Voicethread is a place where a teacher can post up a picture and students can go and respond with their voice (using a headset) or by typing text. It is a great place to practice English or introduce each other (like the beginning of the year).

See the attached tutorial for a full description of how to use Voicethread. Find all my own voicethreads here!

1. A Voicethread Example. Look at this voicethread and how users responded with their voice to learn/practice English! Go here to view the presentation - What is a Voicethread.

Watch this video screencast outlining how to set up an account with voicethread and use it!

Now, introduce yourself on this voicethread! Say hello and tell us where you teach and what you enjoy! Don't be shy!

Here are some of my other favorite Voicethreads! Go to my blog post on using Voicethread for a full listing!

Task #2 VOXOPOP

Voxopop is a site which is similar to Voicethread but doesn't have pictures. Students and teachers can start a discussion with a question. Others can reply with their voice. Teachers can listen to the student's replies and assess their speaking using a general rubric (like this one - the SOLOM - Student Oral Lang. Observation Matrix).

This movie is a good description of Voxopop!

Go to our EFL Classroom 2.0 Voicethread group and join in on our di... Start your own discussions also!

This discussion is part of the Korean Nat. Univ. of Education in Daegu's new teacher program. Teachers go on to voxopop and answer 15 questions. See it here. Or just go see the answers by these teachers in the program.

Did you notice the "EVOCA" recorder on the front page? It is very easy to set up for yourself (you can just embed it on your own page here on SETI Teachers!). Once set up, students can email you recordings of their own voices, like voice email. Make sure they send their name with the recording! It costs a small monthly fee but is well worth it as a teacher.

Here's my own, please drop me a message and say hello!

Here is an example of how you can use scanned pictures from the Korean H.S. and M.S. textbooks to get students practicing their school work by speaking or reading!

Here is the ppt. Photos at the end. Just save the slides as .jpg and then upload to voicethread to use!
